What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring your website and your wider web presence so AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews can retrieve your content, trust it, and cite it when they answer a question. Classic SEO earns you a ranking; AEO earns you the answer itself.
The distinction matters because the answer box is where the click used to be. When someone asks an AI assistant "how do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT?", the engine does not hand back ten blue links. It synthesizes one answer from a handful of sources it considers reliable, sometimes naming them, sometimes not. AEO is the work of being in that handful.
The term sits in a cluster of near-synonyms: GEO (generative engine optimization), LLM SEO, AI search optimization. How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO optimizes for a ranked list; AEO optimizes for a synthesized answer. SEO rewards authority accumulated through links; AEO rewards extractability, verifiable claims, and corroboration across independent sources. They overlap heavily (an unindexed page can do neither), but they reward different writing and different proof.
The overlap is real and load-bearing: ChatGPT retrieves live facts through Bing's index, Gemini through Google's. A page that neither index has crawled simply does not exist to either assistant, which is why the boring fundamentals (crawlability, sitemaps, technical SEO) still gate everything.
The divergence is in what happens after retrieval. A hallucination-averse model checks claims against other sources before repeating them, prefers a 50-word direct answer it can lift over a 500-word narrative it has to interpret, and skips superlatives it cannot verify. "Ottawa's best SEO agency" is noise to a language model; "launched 2026, publishes its pricing, tracks verified AI crawler traffic across client sites" is signal. How do AI engines choose what to cite?
Each engine has its own source diet. Gemini and AI Overviews lean on Google's index, Business Profile signals, and reviews. ChatGPT retrieves through Bing and favours high-authority directories and consistent business data. Perplexity weights freshness, source authority, and inclusion in authoritative lists. Overlap between them is small, so you optimize for each.
Two practical consequences. First, Bing is no longer optional: two of the four major assistants retrieve through it, so a site indexed on Google but absent from Bing is invisible to half the answer engines. Second, third-party corroboration (directories, review platforms, independent lists that mention you) does work that your own website cannot do for itself, because engines treat self-description as a claim and independent mentions as evidence. The source appetites are measurable: SOCi's analysis found Wikipedia cited in 47.9% of top ChatGPT responses and Reddit in 46.7% of top Perplexity citations, which is why the same business needs different evidence for different engines.
A retrieval detail that decides more outcomes than any tactic on this page: Vercel's crawler study found that none of the major AI crawlers execute JavaScript, at a scale of 569 million GPTBot fetches per month on Vercel's network alone. Content that only exists after a script runs does not exist to GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot. Every page on this site is server-rendered for exactly that reason.

How much AI crawler traffic is real?
In our own measurement, 63%. Across client sites we track, 5,902 requests claimed to be AI or search crawlers over twelve days in July 2026; only 3,692 came from IP addresses inside the operator's published ranges. The worst offender was "GPTBot": 1,848 claimed visits, only 389 real, a 79% impostor rate.
This is first-party data from the AI bot tracker we deploy on client sites, and it is why we never report raw user-agent counts to anyone. A request that says "GPTBot" in its User-Agent but comes from an unpublished IP is not OpenAI reading your site; it is a scraper wearing a costume. Any tool that sells you unverified "AI visits" is inflating your numbers by roughly a third.
The verified rows are the actionable ones: real ClaudeBot, Bingbot, and GPTBot traffic on a weeks-old domain means the AI pipelines are ingesting the content. How do you do AEO?
Five layers, in order: make the site retrievable (indexed on Google AND Bing, crawlable by AI bots, llms.txt in place); structure content as direct answers under question headings; mark everything up with schema; publish verifiable, specific claims; then build corroboration through directories, reviews, and independent mentions.

- Retrievability. Both indexes, no accidental bot-blocking in robots.txt, an llms.txt that maps the site for language models.
- Extractable structure. Question headings that mirror what people actually ask, with a 40 to 80 word direct answer immediately below, before the detail. This page is built that way on purpose.
- Schema. Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article, and breadcrumbs as JSON-LD, so engines read facts as data instead of guessing at prose.
- Verifiable claims. Concrete numbers, published pricing, dated statistics with sources. Models skip what they cannot corroborate.
- Corroboration. Consistent business data across directories and review platforms, plus independent mentions. Engines trust what other sources confirm about you.
What are GEO and LLM SEO?
GEO (generative engine optimization) and LLM SEO are alternative names for optimizing content so generative AI systems cite it; AEO is the same discipline named for the outcome, the answer. Usage is settling but not settled, so we cover the distinctions and where each term came from separately.

Does AEO work for local businesses?
Yes, and the field is wide open: the SOCi 2026 Local Visibility Index (about 350,000 locations) found ChatGPT recommends just 1.2% of local business locations, Gemini 11%, and Perplexity 7.4%, against a 35.9% appearance rate in Google's local 3-pack. AI visibility is three to 30 times harder to earn than a local ranking, which means almost every local market has no incumbent yet.

How do you measure AEO?
Three measurements, none of them vibes: verified AI crawler traffic (is the content being ingested), engine testing (ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity the questions your customers ask and record whether you are named), and referral traffic from AI surfaces in your own analytics. All three are checkable in data you own.
This is the part of AEO most providers skip, because honest measurement can say "not yet." Our monthly reporting shows verified crawls only (impostors excluded, as the table above shows why), the raw engine answers to a fixed question set, and the trend of both. A domain competing on answers should expect weeks to months before engines cite it; anyone promising day-one AI citations is selling you the unverified column.
