What kinds of AEO tools exist?

Why does crawler verification matter in an AEO tool?

Because a large share of traffic claiming to be AI crawlers is fake. On sites we track, 5,902 requests claimed to be AI or search bots over twelve days; only 63% came from the operator's published IP ranges, and self-declared "GPTBot" traffic was 79% impostor. Unverified counts overstate your AI visibility by roughly a third.

This is first-party data from the crawler tracker we build into client sites (full table in the pillar guide), and it is the reason we treat verification as the defining feature of the category. A tool that shows you "GPTBot visited 40 times this week" without checking source IPs against OpenAI's published ranges is reporting costume parties. The check itself is not exotic: every major operator publishes its ranges precisely so this verification is possible.

How do you test what AI engines say about you?

Ask them, systematically. Fix a set of questions your customers actually ask, put them to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity on a schedule, and record whether you are named, who is named instead, and which sources the engines cite. The discipline is in the fixed set and the schedule, not the tooling.

This can be done manually in an afternoon a month, and for a single local business that is often the right call; paid visibility trackers earn their fee when you need multi-market coverage or competitive share-of-voice. Either way, keep the raw answers. "We appeared in 3 of 12 discovery questions, up from 0" is a reportable fact; a proprietary visibility score is a number wearing a suit. What tools cover schema and llms.txt?

Google's Rich Results Test and the schema.org validator cover JSON-LD syntax; both are free and sufficient. llms.txt is plain text, so the tool is a text editor and the skill is curation: which pages matter, described in one honest line each. Generators exist but drift from the sitemap unless wired to it.

The drift point comes from experience: our own hand-maintained llms.txt fell to 17 of 45 URLs before we rebuilt it to generate from the same route registry as the sitemap, so the two can no longer disagree. Do you need paid AEO tools at all?

For one local business: mostly no. The gates that decide AEO outcomes (indexation on both engines, open crawler access, schema, answer-first structure, consistent listings) are checkable with free tools plus discipline.
