How to optimize for AI search, step by step
The working checklist we run on client sites, in the order that matters: first make the site retrievable, then extractable, then verifiable, then corroborated. Part of the complete AEO guide.
Step 1: Can AI engines reach your content at all?
Check four gates before touching any copy: indexed on Google, indexed on Bing (ChatGPT and Copilot retrieve through it), AI crawlers not blocked in robots.txt, and an llms.txt file mapping the site for language models. Most small-business sites fail at least two of these before writing enters the picture.
Verification beats assumption here. On sites we track, a third of traffic claiming to be AI crawlers fails IP verification (full numbers in the pillar guide), and plenty of sites blocking "bad bots" are blocking the real ones while impostors walk past. Our free audit checks these gates in one pass.
- Google indexation: Search Console, coverage report, no unexplained exclusions.
- Bing indexation: Bing Webmaster Tools plus IndexNow submission. This is the most commonly skipped gate and it silently removes you from ChatGPT and Copilot.
- robots.txt: confirm GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended are not blocked by an old blanket rule, and that the blocks you DO keep are chosen deliberately.

Step 2: Is your content structured for extraction?
Write for the lift: headings phrased as the questions people actually ask, a 40 to 80 word direct answer immediately under each one, then the detail. One idea per section, concrete nouns over category words, and no answer that depends on reading the previous section to make sense.
The test for every section: if a model quoted only your answer paragraph, verbatim and out of context, would it be accurate and complete enough to stand alone? Language models lift the first clean, self-contained answer they can verify. A brilliant argument that develops over eight paragraphs loses to a plain one stated in the first fifty words.
One research correction worth knowing, because half the AEO industry gets it backwards: question-and-answer formatting alone is not enough. Zhang et al. (arXiv, 2026) measured Q&A-formatted pages at 5.74% LOWER mean influence than non-Q&A pages, while pages dense with definitions, numbers, and comparisons showed 55 to 77% higher influence, and top-influence pages averaged 1,943 words with over twelve times more headings than the bottom quartile. The structure earns the lift only when evidence fills it: question headings wrapped around thin prose measurably underperform.

Step 3: Is your information marked up as data?
Ship JSON-LD for the entities engines actually use: Organization (who you are, with sameAs links to your verified profiles), Service (what you sell, where), FAQPage (your question sections), Article (guides, with honest dates), and BreadcrumbList. Schema converts your facts from prose a model interprets into data it ingests.
Two disciplines make schema worth having. Specificity: use the narrowest type that fits (ProfessionalService over LocalBusiness over Organization) so engines can match you to specific queries. Honesty: never mark up ratings you cannot show, sample content, or dates that did not change. Engines cross-check schema against the visible page, and a mismatch costs more trust than no markup at all.
Step 4: Can a model verify what you claim?
Replace every unverifiable superlative with a checkable specific. "Ottawa's most trusted agency" gives a model nothing to verify, so it gets skipped. "Publishes pricing, tracks verified AI crawler traffic, launched 2026" gives it three claims it can confirm from your own pages and the public record. Specifics survive synthesis; adjectives do not.
Dated statistics with named sources do double duty: they make your pages citable (original data is the single most reliable way to earn citations) and they signal freshness, which engines weight heavily for anything time-sensitive. If you publish numbers, date them and refresh them; a 2024 statistic under a 2026 date reads as staleness to both readers and models.
Step 5: Do independent sources confirm you exist?
Engines treat self-description as a claim and independent agreement as evidence. The corroboration layer is unglamorous: identical name, address, and phone across your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, and the directories that matter in your market, real reviews you respond to, and mentions on pages you do not control.
For a local business this layer overlaps almost completely with Google Business Profile and local SEO work, which is why we run them as one program rather than three. The part nobody can shortcut: earning mentions in independent round-ups and community discussion takes actual merit and actual time. Anyone selling instant authority is selling the impostor column of the crawler table.
How long until AI engines cite you?
Ingestion is fast; citation is slow. On sites we track, verified AI crawler visits begin within days of launch when the gates are open. Being named in answers follows corroboration, and on a new domain that means weeks to months. Measure crawls, engine answers, and AI referrals monthly, and distrust anyone promising day one.
The honest sequence to expect: crawlers arrive first (measurable immediately), indexation deepens, then engine answers begin naming you for the narrow questions where your evidence is strongest, then the set widens.
