How Much Does SEO Cost in Canada? 2026 Prices, and Ours

How much SEO costs in Canada: published estimates run from $75 an hour to about $3,500 a month. What drives the price, how to compare quotes, and ours.

How much SEO costs in Canada depends mostly on who does the work. A BDC advisor puts an SEO firm or consultant at about $3,500 a month, and 79.1% of U.S. and Canadian providers in Ahrefs' survey charge at least $1,001 a month. Viziblty publishes its own price: $2,000 a month.

How much does SEO cost in Canada?

BDC, Canada's business development bank, publishes one advisor's estimate: about $3,500 a month for an SEO firm or consultant, for at least six months. In the same BDC article on SEO for small businesses, David Girolami, a senior business advisor with BDC Advisory Services, puts an individual SEO specialist at $75 to $100 an hour on a three-month engagement.

Survey data points the same way. Ahrefs' pricing survey, whose data dates from 2023, found that 79.1% of the U.S. and Canadian providers who answered charge at least $1,001 a month. Across all 439 respondents, the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000, at 20.4%. The Ahrefs post does not state a currency, so compare its bands loosely with Canadian-dollar quotes.

Against those figures, our $2,000 sits below the BDC advisor's estimate and above the most common band in the Ahrefs survey. We did not find a published figure specific to Ottawa or Gatineau from a source independent of the agencies selling it, so none appears here. What a figure buys matters more than where it sits in a range, which is what the rest of this guide is for.

What drives the cost of SEO?

The cost of SEO is driven mostly by how much work a site needs and who does that work. Where quotes differ, one of these is usually why:

  • The starting point. A site search engines can barely read needs technical work before content can pay off, and that work is front-loaded. This is why setup fees exist.
  • Who does the work. In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, first published in 2023, 57.4% of agencies charge $1,001 or more a month, against 32.2% of freelancers. Consultants were the highest, at 70.6%.
  • Local or worldwide. The same Ahrefs survey found providers serving local markets average about $1,557 a month, against about $3,474 for those serving the whole world. Ahrefs calculated both averages from the top of each price band, so treat them as rough.
  • How many places you serve. Every city or service area you want to show up in needs its own evidence, so a business covering Ottawa, Gatineau and Kanata needs more pages than one serving a single neighbourhood.
  • What no budget buys. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Money buys the work on relevance and popularity. It does not move your address.

What does SEO cost in Ottawa and Gatineau?

Viziblty's SEO program costs $2,000 a month for businesses in Ottawa and Gatineau, one rate for one program. The rate is the same on both sides of the river, and it is on the pricing page for anyone to read without booking a call.

The only variable is the one-time $6,000 setup fee. It exists because the work is front-loaded: the diagnosis, the technical fixes, the schema, the page structure and the tracking all happen in the first weeks. On month-to-month you pay it once. On a 12-month term we cover it, because a year of working together pays for it on our side.

Many agencies ask you to book a call before they name a number. We publish ours because a price you can read before you talk to anyone is a price you can compare, and comparing is the whole point of this page.

Is month-to-month or a 12-month term cheaper?

A 12-month term costs $6,000 less in year one than month-to-month, because Viziblty covers the setup fee on the term. The monthly rate and the work are identical on both.

The arithmetic is short. Month-to-month is 12 payments of $2,000 plus the $6,000 setup fee, which is $30,000. The 12-month term is 12 payments of $2,000, which is $24,000. There is no cancellation penalty on month-to-month and no lock-in beyond the term you choose.

Month-to-month suits an owner who wants to see the work before committing. The term suits an owner who already knows they want the year. Either way, the first honest checkpoint is about three months in, which is when trend-quality evidence starts to exist in your own data.

What does $2,000 a month include?

Viziblty's $2,000 a month covers local SEO, AI search visibility, content, technical work, website maintenance, and monthly reporting. Services are not sold separately, so there is no cheaper tier that leaves half of it out.

In practice that is three kinds of work running every month:

  • Diagnosis: keyword and intent research refreshed monthly, competitor and gap analysis, and AI-visibility testing across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
  • The build: technical fixes (crawl, speed, schema, page structure), location and service pages written to answer real questions, Google Business Profile work, monthly content, and refreshes of pages that have decayed.
  • Reporting: Google Search Console, Bing and Google Analytics, pulled from your own accounts, with lead and call tracking wired up and a plain-language monthly report beside the raw data.
  • Not included: a new website. When the current site cannot be fixed in place, a rebuild is an add-on to the program, quoted separately.

What has the program produced so far?

Viziblty's published proof so far is one case study, for our first client. 100th Meridian Window Film is in the Niagara region, and the owner lets us publish the results in full.

The 100th Meridian case study dates every number. The site received 6 server-confirmed inquiries in its first 24 days, against 9 in the old site's entire prior year, and Google had indexed 122 pages by July 23, 2026. That is one company in one market, so read it as evidence that the method works, not as a forecast for an Ottawa business.

How do you compare SEO quotes?

Compare SEO quotes on the year-one total, the written scope, who owns the accounts, and how you leave. A lower monthly number can hide a setup fee, a long minimum term, or a scope that leaves out the work you need.

  • Ask for the year-one total, setup included. A monthly rate alone is half a price.
  • Ask for the scope in writing: which pages, how much content, what technical work, and what the report contains.
  • Ask who owns your accounts. Google allows only one primary owner on a Business Profile, and in Search Console an owner has full control over the property. Both should be you, with the agency added as a user.
  • Ask for the minimum term, the notice period and any exit fee, and compare those as carefully as the rate.
  • Ask Google's own questions. Its guide to hiring an SEO suggests asking for examples of previous work, what results to expect and in what timeframe, and whether the agency will share all the changes it makes to your site.
  • Walk away from a guaranteed ranking. The same Google guide says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
  • For a seven-question checklist with a way to check every answer yourself, see how to choose an SEO company in Ottawa.

What does a free SEO audit tell you before you pay?

Viziblty's free Visibility Audit runs five live checks on your site in about a minute, with no card. The five are AI crawler access, schema, llms.txt, platform, and page weight, and you run them yourself before you speak to anyone.

Paid audits cost real money elsewhere. BizStori's Toronto guide puts a one-time audit for a growing business at $800 to $2,000 CAD. The free check is narrower than that: five automated checks on one page, which tells you whether machines can read your site at all. The full diagnosis is part of the program.

Start with the free SEO audit, and read the result before deciding whether the program is worth it for you.

Frequently asked questions

Does SEO cost more in Gatineau than in Ottawa? Not with Viziblty: it is one published rate, $2,000 a month, for businesses on both sides of the river. We found no independent published estimate specific to Gatineau, so we cannot tell you what the wider Gatineau market charges.

Is there a setup fee for SEO? With Viziblty, a one-time $6,000 setup fee applies on month-to-month and we cover it on a 12-month term. Other agencies handle front-loaded work differently, so ask any agency for its year-one total.

Can I buy only part of the program, like Google Business Profile work? No. Viziblty's services are not sold separately. The free Visibility Audit is the only thing offered on its own, and a website rebuild is an add-on to the program, quoted separately.

How long should I budget for SEO? Plan for at least a few months before judging it. A BDC advisor recommends at least six months with a firm, and our own reporting becomes meaningful around month three, when there is post-change data to compare.

How much of my marketing budget should go to SEO? BDC suggests B2B companies spend 2 to 5% of revenue on marketing, and B2C companies 5 to 10%. SEO is one line inside that total, so the monthly fee should fit within it alongside everything else you spend on marketing.
